Why Bluetooth audio lags behind the video, and what fixes it
If voices in a video land a moment after the lips move, or a game's footsteps arrive late, you are hearing Bluetooth latency: the time it takes sound to be compressed, sent over the radio, buffered and decoded in the earbuds.
Where the delay comes from
Audio is encoded by a codec on the phone, split into packets and sent over Bluetooth. The earbuds keep a small buffer so that a dropped packet does not cause a gap, then decode and play it. True wireless earbuds add one more step: the signal often reaches one bud first and is relayed to the other.
Typical end-to-end delay
| Situation | Rough latency |
|---|---|
| Wired headphones | almost none |
| Bluetooth with SBC or AAC | 150 to 250 ms |
| Earbuds with a "game mode" | 60 to 120 ms |
| LE Audio with LC3 (when both ends support it) | can be under 100 ms |
Most people notice lip-sync errors above roughly 100 ms when sound comes late, which is why video apps try to compensate.
Why videos usually look fine but games do not
Streaming and video apps know the Bluetooth delay reported by the phone and hold the picture back to match. Games cannot wait, because they must react to your input immediately, so the delay becomes audible. That is also why a video app looks fine while a browser video or a social clip drifts.
Practical fixes
Turn on the earbuds' low-latency or game mode if the companion app has one. Keep the phone and earbuds close, without your body between them; interference makes the buds enlarge their buffer. Close other Bluetooth connections such as watches during gaming. For competitive games, a wired connection is still the only zero-delay option.
Choosing earbuds with this in mind
If video calls and casual games matter to you, look for a game mode in the specifications and for support for newer codecs. Budget models such as the soundcore life p2i show that low price and decent everyday performance can go together; check the manufacturer's spec sheet for the exact modes each model offers.
